I've been making cold calls personally since 1981 when I started in the insurance business. I was constantly in the top 15 out of 1800 sales reps in the company. I credit my success to the fact that I threw out the company's "canned" sales calls and created my own.
In 1992 I joined a multinational advertising company and rewrote their phone scripts and in-person presentations. We went from $28M in sales to $96M in six years.
In 1998 I started my own publishing company and we had to make cold calls to sell the advertising in the magazine. I sold the magazine in 2007 and built an online advertising company by (you guessed it) cold calling advertisers to sell the advertising spaces.
